PHOTO OP-ED: Tempting fate on the breakwater

The wind was howling from the east-northeast at more than 30 knots on Saturday, enormous seas were pounding the lakefront and breaking waves were sweeping over the Port Washington breakwater and, sure enough, two fellows thought it would be great fun to venture out on the breakwater to experience nature’s fury. Even behind the concrete barricades on the midsection of the breakwater, the adventurers were in danger of being washed away by the overwhelming waves. Soaked and perhaps chastened, they made it back to shore. Others who tried similar stunts in the past have not been so fortunate. Lives have been lost and rescuers endangered while saving foolhardy potential victims.                          Photo by Sam Arendt
