The win streak last week reached five for the Ozaukee/Random Lake high schools girls’ soccer team with a signature victory.
The team won at Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian, 3-0.
Mia Evraets scored all three goals, the first coming barely 90 seconds into the game and the others in the second half.
Kamrin Kunz had two assists, and Reese Prom had one. Keeper Rebecca Kraemer made 12 saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian had been ranked No. 3 in Division 4, according to the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association.
“This was a good confidence builder for the team. Last year we lost 3-1 against them, but I felt we had a good chance against them,” coach Matt Wilson said.
“I still don’t think our Cedar Valley High girls realize how good they can be when they are all locked in or how far they can truly go so beating a team like Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran was a bit of an eye-opener for them. If they just keep working, stay humble and trust the system then they will have an opportunity to compete in any game.”
Wilson said the team adopted the Cedar Valley name due to the cheese factory between the two communities.
This time, “most of this game was played in the middle of the field. Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian had a lot of speed up front and really tried playing the through ball to beat our back line but they held up nicely all game,” Wilson said.
“When they did get the ball past our defense, freshman Abby Depies did a nice job of running it down and turning it back up field.”
Wilson also praised the back line for working with midfielders Faith Wilson and Kunz, who forced the Crusaders into taking shots from 25 yards away at the closest.
“Rebecca Kraemer stayed on point and made some nice saves throughout the game,” coach Wilson said.
Rain throughout the day and the night before made it tough to get a good touch on the ball, he said, but the team’s offense stayed patient and Evraets and Prom “made a lot of nice runs.”
On April 29, the team clobbered visiting St. Mary Catholic, 7-0, in its first home conference game of the season. It was 3-0 at halftime.
Reese Prom scored on an assist by Chesney Mayer. Chloe Dybul scored unassisted, and Kunz scored on an assist from Prom.
In the second half, Madie Prom scored on an assist by Evraets, then Evraets scored on an assist from Mayer. Lexi Wilson scored on an assist from Reese Prom, and Evraets finished out the scoring on an assist from Emily Tinder.
“This was a great game to showcase what an unselfish team these ladies are, and when they are locked in they can really score from anywhere. Instead of just doing the run-and-gun offense, our forwards Reese Prom and Mia Everets came back a little farther than usual and became part of the midfield to help fight for the ball to hold possession, which allowed our midfielders Chesney Meyer and Madie Prom to make some effective runs up the field,” Wilson said.
The team’s back line of Dybul and Baszonia Neumann “were solid all night,” as were the wings Mya Ternes, Addison Brody and Abby Depies, he said.
Wilson said Kunz and Faith Wilson always do well fighting for the ball or helping build a solid attack.
“About the last 15 minutes were played by mostly our subs and it was nice to see how our play didn’t drop off at all,” Wilson said.
The team, 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Big East Conference, was to host Cedar Grove-Belgium on Tuesday, May 6, in game for first place in the league. It plays at Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah on Thursday, May 8, and hosts Oostburg on Tuesday, May 13.
