The Ozaukee/Random Lake co-op girls’ high school soccer team last week honored its seniors and inspired youth to grow up to be just like those veterans while splitting a pair of games to end the regular season.

On May 27 at home, the Cedar Valley Girls, as the team calls itself, shredded a struggling Campbellsport squad, 9-1.

Mia Evraets scored the first two goals, one on an assist by Baszonia Newmann.

Chesney Mayer scored unassisted, then Kamrin Kunz from Evraets.

Lexi Wilson scored on a Madie Prom assist, then Mayer again unassisted. Marissa TerMaat made it 7-0 on an Kunz assist before half.

Savannah Quade scored on an assist from Wilson and TerMaat scored unassisted in the second half, before the Cougars put one in.

The game ended after 60 minutes due to the eight-goal mercy rule.

“It was a strong game for the girls and they executed very well,” coach Matt Wilson said.

“We still had time to get our relief players in for some work, and they also played really well. The last three goals came from those girls.”

It was youth night and young players stood with the high-schoolers during the national anthem and got their autographs after the game.

“It was a fun night all around and a great way to expose them to high school soccer in our Random Lake and Ozaukee high schools,” Wilson said. “I really hope it inspires them and keeps them working hard for their future in soccer and gives them something to look forward to when they get to high school.”

Last Thursday’s 6-0 home loss to Winneconne, ranked ninth in Division 3 in the latest Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll, wasn’t indicative of how play went.

“We had nothing to gain or lose with this non-conference game so I decided to start pulling our starters about midway through the first half. I just wanted to give them a little time and I also wanted to see if we could play with Winneconne, and the answer was yes and I was pretty happy with what I saw from the starters,” Wilson said.

Cedar Valley was down, 1-0, at halftime.

The team honored its seniors, Kunz, Prom and Mackenzie Burrows from Ozaukee and Mayer, Neumann, Rebecca Kraemer and Mya Ternes from Random Lake.

“We will definitely miss them next year not just because they’re great soccer players but also a great group of young ladies,” Wilson said.

During the game’s last five minutes, Wilson said he let the seniors play whatever position they wanted.

The team, which finished 10-6-2 overall and 4-2-1 and in third place in the Big East Conference, got a 2 seed in the Division 4 playoffs and was to host No. 15 Berlin on Thursday, June 5. The winner plays the winner of the game between No. 7 Lodi and No. 10 Living Word Lutheran on Saturday, June 7.
