Ozaukee County prosecutor Ben Lindsay announced Monday that he will run for district attorney in November.

In doing so, Lindsay, 39, who has been an assistant district attorney in the county since 2018, aims to succeed District Attorney Adam Gerol.

Lindsay’s announcement comes a week after Gerol, who has had a career in the District Attorney’s office that has spanned more than three decades and is not running for re-election to an office he has held since 2009, told Ozaukee Press he is seeking the appointment by Gov. Tony Evers to the Ozaukee County Circuit Court’s Branch 1 bench.

That job is currently held by Judge Paul Malloy, who said last week he will step down from the bench mid-term on July 1 because of family health reasons.

Malloy, the senior and presiding judge in Ozaukee County, has served as a judge for 22 years.

Lindsay began his career as a prosecutor in Milwaukee County in 2012, and in addition to prosecuting adults in Ozaukee County he serves as the juvenile justice prosecutor.

He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

While in law school, Lindsay was a judicial intern for Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser.

He also worked for State Sen. Alberta Darling during college, then served in the George W. Bush administration from 2006 to 2008, ultimately as deputy associate director of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, where he recruited candidates for presidential appointments.

Lindsay and his wife Courtney have lived in Ozaukee County since 2013 and currently reside with their son in Cedarburg.

He is running as a Republican.
