“Our numbers this year are a little smaller than I would prefer but we have some great athletes that are excited to learn the sport and compete,” coach Andrew Pfeuffer said.

This season is a little different.

“There is a little more excitement this year to be back after missing last season by both the athletes and coaches. It was really difficult for the athletes last year to miss out on that opportunity to compete, and I feel like they are hungry to get back to it,” Pfeuffer said.

But there’s a catch. Missing last season means more training is required to get back into the swing of things, and the indoor season, often used as a warm-up to the outdoor season, was canceled due to the alternate fall season held in spring for schools who waited to compete due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Our most experienced athletes on our team last competed as sophomores and freshmen, and we basically have two years worth of freshmen athletes on the team because this year’s sophomores did not get the chance to compete last year,” Pfeuffer said.

That has led to some adjustments.

“We’ve really had to get back to the basics of track and field to get everyone back up to speed,” Pfeuffer said. “However, it has been fun coaching them the basics and seeing the athletes be very receptive to coaching and working extremely hard.”
