Ozaukee’s struggles continue

It was a similar story for the Ozaukee High School football team again on Friday.

The Warriors faced a Big East Conference title contender and got blown out.

After a 42-7 loss to Hilbert the week before, this time Reedsville beat Ozaukee, 48-7, behind a 35-point second quarter.

“They took it to us up front. They were the best front seven we faced,” Ozaukee coach Cole Large said.

In the pivotal second frame, Reedsville quarterback Brennen Dvorachek had scoring passes of 25, 48 and 25 yards, some on nontraditional throws across the field, Large said.

Weston Liebzeit had touchdown runs for 36 and 33 yards.

The Warriors scored in the third quarter. Quarterback Phil McLarty hit a streaking Jonny Melendez down the sideline for a 43-yard touchdown.

“Jonny had a couple of nice catches. It was good to see him get going a little bit,” Large said.

Despite the score, sophomore Sawyer Kowalkowski was one Warrior who never gave up. He blocked an extra point attempt and made a couple of nice tackles, Large said.

“He was still bringing it even when things didn’t look so good,” he said.

The Warriors rushed for fewer than 100 yards in slipping to 0-4.

Dvoracheck went 7-for-9 passing for 176 yards and four touchdowns.

For the Warriors, McLarty and Noah Harness combined to go 11-for-15 for 150 yards and a score. Melendez caught four balls for 83 yards and a touchdown, and Bret Hamm caught six for 65 yards.

Reedsville went to 4-0 and plays at Hilbert Friday in a battle of Big East brutes.

This Friday, the Warriors host Manitowoc Lutheran (1-3), which just lost at home to Howards Grove (3-1), 25-14.

“It’s good to get back home and get front of our home crowd. I think the boys are going to be pretty fired up by Friday night,” Large said.
