Open house, programs set at Port library in March

An open house so the public can see recent improvements made to the Niederkorn Library in Port Washington tops the list of programs at the facility in March.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Grand Avenue entrance to the library will be held at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, March 7, with the open house running from 10 a.m. to noon.

Mischief and Magic will perform a family-friendly magic and comedy show at 11 a.m. in the community room, and refreshments will be provided.

The second annual veteran art series will begin with a 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, class on acrylic painting on canvas led by Rodrigo Santamaria.

The class is for veterans and their families of all ages and artistic skill levels. The workshop will focus on acrylic painting techniques, using stencils to guide creativity and unique, yet easy ways to engage in the painting process.

Youth activities:

Storytimes with Miss Amanda are held at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays from March 2 to May 13, except March 31 to April 1, with themes that change each week.

Storytimes are most suitable for preschoolers but are open to all children.

The Pokémon Trading Card Club will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7. Those attending can trade their cards and will receive a new-to-you Pokémon Card from the library.

A STEM Studio session will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12.

The drop-in program is for children ages 8 to 12 who like to create art and build projects. All supplies are provided.

The Lego Building Club, geared to children 5 and older, will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 23.

A sensory playtime  will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, March 27.

The playtime will include a variety of tactile, sensory activity stations that children younger than 13 may explore with their caregiver.

Those attending are asked to dress to make a mess.

An Art in Nature class at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, will have children ages 5 and older exploring patterns in nature through hands-on observation of natural materials from Wisconsin habitats. They will then create a piece of art using natural materials and techniques.

There will be a Peeps diorama contest at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2.

Children and families will create a scene for Peeps to be staged in that will be displayed at the library so people can vote for their favorite.

The Peeps, cardboard diorama base and various decorations will be provided.

Participants are asked to register in advance.

Adult and teen activities:

A computer class in internet browsing will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 2.

Participants will learn what a computer is, how to use a mouse and keyboard and how to navigate websites. This class will teach people about search engines and get them started searching the internet.

A grief support group will meet from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 4 and 18. The group is facilitated by Compassus Hospice.

The D&D PW Bookwyrms gaming group meets from 5 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays. The group is open to players of all experience levels.

Medicare 101, which will cover how to enroll in Medicare and what the various parts of Medicare are, will be discussed at 1 p.m. Monday, March 9.

Job search assistance will be provided from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, March 11 and 25.

Those attending can learn about free employment tools and resources with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and Job Center of Wisconsin. Participants should call the library to book a time slot in advance.

  A short story hour will be held at 1 p.m.  Wednesday, March 11, at the Port Washington Senior Center.

The Friday Morning Book Talk group will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 13, at the Senior Center.

Copies of the featured book will be available for check out.   

  The Novel Ideas Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 16.

The Bring Your Own Book Club will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at Inventors Brewpub.

Those attending can share the book they are reading or just finished, no matter the genre.

A “Work in Progress” Wednesday will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. March 25. Those attending may bring any project they are working on, no matter the media, for a time of work and sharing.

The Teen Advisory Board for students in grades seven to 11 will meet from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, to plan the Teen Café library program.

Members will discuss their expectations for the program, including planning the themes, activities and additional opportunities at the library.

Time spent on the advisory board counts toward volunteer or service hours for school.

The Food as Medicine series will discuss anti-inflammatory foods, gut health, the Mediterranean and DASH diets, healthier ways to prepare foods, the benefits of plant-based eating and balanced diets with Amy Hackman, Aurora Health Care community nurse educator, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5.

Tiny art will be the focus of a 6 p.m. Thursday, March 19, program for people 14 and older. All supplies will be provided as teens and adults paint on a tiny canvas.
