New format doesn’t hamper E-cycle day

The town and village of Belgium’s annual E-cycle day ran smoothly Saturday morning, despite an increase in items and a new system.

Some residents waited nearly half an hour to drop off items at the town transfer site but, Town Supr. Tom Bichler said, people honored the request to stay in vehicles as six volunteers removed items in order to maintain social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

“I really respected the people’s patience,” Bichler said. “It was very orderly.”

Arrows directed traffic into and out of the site. The line of cars waiting stretched onto the road.

Bichler said more items were taken this year than last, especially dehumidifiers, air conditioners and TVs, some nearly 40 years old.

Bichler said items filled one 53-foot semitrailer and a 32-foot fifth-wheel trailer were filled. He said he won’t get a final tally on the amount of items for a couple of months.

Keirmar of Fredonia, provided staff and dumpsters for the event for free. Company owner John Bellmann and his son, John Jr., helped at the event. It was the first time the town tried using the company.

Bichler, his son Max, Town Chairman Tom Winker and Village Trustee Clem Gottsacker also helped transfer items.

“Everyone did a nice job. We went as fast as we could go,” Bichler said.

Bichler said the response was so great that he will talk to the Town Board about possibly holding two E-cycle days per year. They are the only times residents may recycle electronics.

For regular recyclables, the town transfer site, 1215 Jay Rd., is open during summer from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays.
