Native plants, tree giveaway set in Port

“Thinking About Our Yards in New Ways” will be presented at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Niederkorn Library in Port Washington.

The program will be given by Jill Kunsmann of the Lake Michigan Bird Observatory — formerly Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Observatory.

Kunsmann, who is part of the observatory’s neighborhood habitat improvement program, will discuss how she has created spaces of beauty in her yard that also provide a haven for butterflies, birds and other valuable pollinators.

Her advice can be used to create a plan to work with what people may already have in their yards and strategically incorporate native trees, shrubs and flowers.

There will also be material on hand about the observatory’s third annual oak and hickory tree giveaway on Saturday, April 22, and a new spring native plant sale in Port Washington.

Trees will be given away at the library from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Veterans Park.

The species include bur oak, shagbark hickory, swamp white oak and red oak. The trees are 2 to 3 years old and 1 to 2 feet tall.

Two trees will be given per household while supplies last.
