Mountain bikers off to strong start

The Ozaukee Composite mountain bike racing team started its season on Sunday in Minooka Park in Waukesha.

The team scored 1,389 points to take 25th of 31 teams in Division 2 competition. Wausau East won with 2,062 points.

In the freshman boys race, Sam Strohl finished 21st of 47 competitors. Tristan Sohr was 34th and Mitchell Teunissen was 36th.

In the freshman girls race, Erin Hong, after returning from a trip to Switzerland the night before, finished 15th out of 22 racers.

In the eighth-grade girls race, Emma Kasza-James finished second of 19 bikers.

In the seventh-grade girls race, Reese Kasza-James finished sixth out of 34 bikers.Toni Walters finished 19th out of 34 in the 7th grade girls race.

In the sixth-grade boys race, Kaden Kopp finished 17th of 69 competitors.

These were the first-ever races for Strohl, Sohr, Teunissen, Kopp, Hong and Walters.

“Everyone did awesome,” coach Anthony James said.

The races drew more than 625 participants, which was nearly 200 more than last year, he said.

The team next competes Sunday, Sept. 16, at Nordic Mountain in Mt. Morris.
