A 58-year-old Georgia man died of injuries he suffered in an accident on Port Washington’s far west side last Thursday.

Thomas Kay of Fayetteville, Ga., was taken by Port Washington ambulance from the accident scene to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, then taken by a Flight for Life helicopter to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, where he died, Police Capt. Craig Czarnecki said.

Kay recently accepted a new job in Port and was planning to relocate his family to the area, Fire Chief Mark Mitchell said.

The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. June 16 when a pickup truck driven by Mark Hecker, 68, of the Town of Fredonia, was heading south on Highway LL and turned left onto Aster Street, striking the motorcycle driven by Kay, Czarnecki said.

Kay, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, was ejected from his motorcycle and landed in a ditch, Mitchell said.

He said that Hecker told officers “he never saw him,” Czarnecki said.

Hecker was cited by police for failure to yield while making a left turn, he said.

Port Washington police, fire and ambulance responded to the scene, as well as the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office, he said.
