Mark Starszak, the administrator of Moose Lodge 1043 in downtown Saukville, was on his way to work in Milwaukee at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, when he drove by the lodge and saw a car sticking out of the front door.

There were Saukville Police and Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office squad cars, too.

What happened, according to a police report, is that Ontarius M. Mcferren, an 18-year-old West Bend man, crashed the 2006 white Chevrolet van he was driving into the building.

Starszak said damage to the building was “not too bad.”

The van struck the steel front door of the lodge building, knocking it off its hinges and into an interior foyer wall, which sustained a two-foot gash. The crash also broke the glass of an interior door and damaged brick and concrete work of the front stoop, broke off a hand rail and destroyed the door jam, he said.

Starszak said this week he has not yet received a damage estimate.

Mcferren told police he was driving home from work when he “nodded off” and drove into the building. Mcferren said he was unhurt and declined medical attention, according to the report.

Mcferren told police the car was uninsured and that he drank two malt liquors about 10 p.m. Field sobriety tests indicated he was not impaired.

A records check revealed Mcferren’s driver’s license had been revoked due to a drunken driving conviction and there was an open warrant for his arrest through the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

Mcferren was arrested and taken into custody.

A charge for operating after revocation was referred to the District Attorney’s Office. He also was cited for driving without insurance and failure to keep his vehicle under control.
