A Merry-Go-Fish named Cat or Rose

Two youngsters participating in a naming contest at the Niederkorn Library in Port Washington provided names to be considered for a fish in the Greater Port Washington Kiwanis Club’s Merry-Go-Fish fundraiser to benefit Possibility Playground. Charlotte Evenson, 4, who was pictured with Kiwanis Club member John Sigwart holding the fish sponsored by Beck’s Grand Avenue and designed by local artist John Reichert, said she gave the golden fish the name Cat “because I like that name.” Evenson won the ages 3 to 6 category in the contest, while June Wilson, who is not pictured, won the ages 7 to 12 category with the name Rose, selected, she said, “because it is pretty.” The girls each won a $25 Port Main Street gift certificate that can be used at downtown businesses. The 25 fish in the Merry-Go-Fish campaign will be exhibited beginning Sept. 5 at the Port Exploreum, where an open house and artist reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 9 — when there will be no admission fee at the museum. The fish will be auctioned off on Oct. 5.                          Photo by Sam Arendt
