May 11 party set for book inspired by Port art show

The launch of a book featuring the works of local poets and artists, “Responding: A Conversation in Color,” will be celebrated from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 11, at Gallery 224 in Port Washington.
The three artists and some of the poets will discuss the project at the reception. They will also be available to sign copies of the book, which will be available for purchase at the gallery and on Amazon.
The book is based on an exhibition at the gallery this past winter and the poetry readings that accompanied it.
The exhibit included works by Martha Coaty, Erica Jane Huntzinger, and Angela Pierro, who demonstrated how color can be explored in decisively singular ways while still appealing to a sense of cohesiveness.
Ten poets — Beth Bretl, Jordan Dunn, Annie Grizzle, Jenny Gropp, Sam Pekarske, Oody Petty, Karl Pradel, Bethany Price, Laura Solomon and Tad Phippen Wente — were each invited to write a poem in response to the exhibit.
The collaboration and book were the result of a conversation between Gallery 224 Executive Director Jane Suddendorf and the gallery’s poetry coordinator Karl Pradel.
“After the reading, Angela (Pierro) and I started talking, and the idea for the book sort of just fell from the sky,” Pradel said. “Working on the book together was effortless and speaks to the synergy that can exist between artists and writers.”
The gallery is at 224 E. Main St.
