Lowrance-Eischen could have breakout year for Ozaukee boys
When the Ozaukee High School boys’ basketball team took the court Tuesday at Reedsville, it did so with the need to fill some big shoes.
“We lost six seniors and four senior starters. Three of those starters received all-conference accolades,” coach Bob Domach said.
Those three players were among the best trio of players from one class in program history. They were capable of big offensive games. Each had at least one game scoring 30 points or more.
Included in the group is Bret Hamm, who was named to the Big East second team. He led the Warriors last year in scoring with 17 points per game, rebounding with 6.7 per game, assists with 4.4 per game and tied for the lead in steals with 2.4 per game. Hamm is the second-most prolific scorer in Ozaukee boy’s history, finishing his career with 1,199 points, behind professional baseball player Noah Miller.
Aaron Nehls was the second-leading scorer for the Warriors a year ago and was also named to the second team.
He averaged 15.2 points per game and led the team in three-pointers with 82. He had 3.2 assists per game.
Sawyer Kowalkowski is the third of the group and earned Big East honorable mention.
He averaged 14.4 points per game and 2.4 steals per game, along with 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
Kowalkowski and Hamm are tied with Miller for the single-game scoring record at Ozaukee with 38 points.
Despite the losses, Domach knows he has some talent to build around.
“We do return several players capable of stepping up into bigger roles this year,” he said.
“Brice Schueller and Otto Utrecht will be expected to make big steps in their contributions. Jared Robinson is working his way back from an ACL tear and, as he fully returns to heath, he will be able to fill a big role for us.”
Schueller is a 6-foot-tall senior guard and Utecht is a 6-4 senior center with two years of varsity experience. Robinson, a 5-7 guard, spent time in the starting lineup a year ago and proved to be a defensive specialist until he injured his knee midway through the season.
The Warriors have at least one budding star.
“We feel Braydon Lowrance-Eischen can have a breakout year and become one of the best players in the conference,” Domach said.
Lowrance-Eischen is a 6-5 sophomore forward who saw extensive varsity action last season.
Chase Mills, a 6-3 senior forward, took over Robinson’s spot in the lineup and is expected to step up this season against several top-notch opponents.
“We have a very difficult schedule this year, and we play in the toughest small school conference in the state,” Domach said.
“I am excited to see how we grow this year as a team and take on the challenges that come our way.”
Domach said Sheboygan Lutheran is the favorite to win the Big East South Division.
Ozaukee will host Living Word Lutheran on Friday, Dec. 6 and host rival Cedar Grove-Belgium on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
The Warriors went 16-12 last season and advanced to the Division 5 sectional semifinal. Ozaukee finished 5-7 and in fourth place in the Big East South Division.
