Lincoln Smith

    Lincoln Delos Smith, age 94, of Colgate, Wis., formerly of Port Washington, WI, passed away Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020, at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital.
    He was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Port Washington, the son of Captain Oliver Herbert and Leota Cooley Smith.
    He graduated from Port Washington High School in 1944 and served his country in the U.S. Navy and later in the Wisconsin National Guard. He never saw combat as the “Germans and Japanese gave up,” he would say, “when they found out he was about to enter the war.”
    On April 12, 1952, Lincoln married Maxine “Max” Louise Keller of Manitowoc, Wis. In Port Washington, they raised a family of three boys, Dana, Kirby and Brian.
    Maxine preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 1991, after sharing a wonderful 39 years together.
    On May 25, 1997, Lincoln married another wonderful woman, Donna Spangenberg Szudajski of Milwaukee. They shared another 23 wonderful years together.
    Lincoln’s long and full life was filled with love, work, study and adventure.
    His first job was, “to take the gunk off the hooks used to catch the lake trout.” For this, he received a penny per hundred from his father Oliver. Later he tended nets, fished and worked for Smith Bros. Fisheries.
    After taking the GI Bill and graduating from Carroll College as an accountant, he worked for Smith Bros.’ numerous businesses as president, managing the office until retiring in 1988.
    Lincoln, with many family and friends, loved to sail, boat, water ski, snowmobile, have fish boils with neighbors and lobster bakes at the family cottage in Door County.
    And travel. Lincoln visited all 50 states and much of the world. One of his grandest adventures with Donna was a round-the-world cruise. Other adventures at age 89 included zip lining down the Las Vegas strip and flying to Ireland to witness his granddaughter graduate from high school.
    His memberships include Ozaukee Lodge #17 Free and Accepted Mason in Port Washington, where he served as worshipful master. Lincoln was also very active (Donna says, “He did not just join a group, he participated.”) in the Order of the Eastern Star, Milwaukee Tripoli Shrine, Masonic Seafarers, Long Riders, Royal Order of the Jesters, Hillbillies, Royal Order Of Scotland, Red Cross of Constantine, and the Scottish Rite.
    He was a longtime board member of the Port Washington Union Cemetery Association, administrator of the Evelyn Smith Memorial Scholarship fund, member of Rotary International and long-time supporter of the First Congregational Church of Port Washington.
    He is survived by his wife Donna, his children Dana (Carol) Smith of Belgium, Wis., Kirby (Sherri) Smith of Las Vegas; and Brian (Konnie) Smith of Rochester, Minn.; Donna’s sons Blaine Szudajski of Milwaukee, Wis., and Lowell (Ellen) Szudajski of Branson, Mo.; six grandchildren, Richard and Bethany, Eric and Mallory, Alexandra and Lauren; and eight great-grandchildren, Ian, Evelyn and Cordelia, Collin, Jaden, Trent, Dominic and Malcom.
    Lincoln is further survived by his brother Daniel Smith of Punta Gorda, Fla., nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and good friends.
    He was preceded in death by his wife Maxine, his sister Virginia Haack, his brother Herbert “Bert,” his granddaughter-in-law Catherine and granddaughter Ciara Madeline.
    Services will be held on Oct. 10, 2020, at Poole Funeral Home, 203 N. Wisconsin St., Port Washington, Wis.
    The family will receive relatives and friends from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
    The service will commence at 1 p.m., including a Masonic funeral rite by his brothers of Ozaukee Lodge #17 F&AM.
    Interment will take place at the Union Cemetery in Port Washington, following the services.
