LETTER:Wisconsin Democrats honest, courageous in Clinton’s trial
To Ozaukee Press:
President Bill Clinton was impeached on Dec. 19, 1998. He was acquitted by the Senate on Feb. 12, 1999. The impeachment was by the Republican House and the acquittal by the Democratic Senate. Now, 20 years later, President Donald Trump has been impeached by Democrats in the House. The next step is a trial in the Senate.
In the impeachment trial of the Democcratic President Clinton in the Democratic Senate, Sen. Herb Kohl, a Democrat from Wisconsin, called Clinton’s conduct “deplorable.” Kohl also spoke of the “deep disquiet I feel about the failings, lies and weaknesses displayed by the president. Under the body of evidence before us runs the bad blood of bad character, and that deeply disturbs me.”
How many Republican senators today would be that honest and courageous?
If only we had the same honesty and courage from our Republican senators today.
It seems that these senators are asking the White House, “How low shall we go?” And our president answers with a smirk, “I’ll tell you.”
As Americans who truly love our country, whether Republican, Democrat or independent, we should hope that our nation will be more united in 2020 with a strong appeal to our greatest president: Abraham Lincoln, pray for us.
