LETTER: World’s needy and our state economy hurt by USAID cut
To Ozaukee Press:
As a lifelong Wisconsin resident, I am deeply troubled by the recent dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). This decision doesn’t just affect global humanitarian efforts—it also has real consequences for Wisconsin’s economy.
For years, USAID has been a reliable buyer of American agricultural products,
supporting farmers across Wisconsin. Our dairy, soybeans and grain have helped feed struggling communities worldwide while providing stability for our local producers. By shutting down USAID, we’re not just turning our backs on those in need—we’re undercutting Wisconsin farmers who depend on these markets.
And for what? This program costs less than 1% of the federal budget, yet suddenly, thanks to a billionaire like Elon Musk, it’s being framed as wasteful? Just weeks ago, Republicans and Democrats alike praised USAID for its success.
Wisconsin farmers, workers and families don’t turn our backs on what’s right. We believe in smart policy, not knee-jerk reactions driven by the whims of billionaires. It’s time to stop this reckless dismantling of USAID before more harm is done.
