LETTER: Who are secret sabateurs of Cedar Gorge nature preserve?

To Ozaukee Press:

When I wrote my first letter to the editor of my Michigan newspaper years ago, I learned it would not be accepted without a signature printed with it. The editor explained that if you are going to express yourself in the public arena, you must stand behind your conviction.

The DNR recommended a significant Knowles Nelson grant to help the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust purchase Cedar Gorge Clay Bluffs along Lake Michigan. One of the following 12 Republicans on the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee is the anonymous saboteur of the funding. Who is it? Duey Stroebel? Mark Born? Howard Marklein? Dale Kooyenga? Mary Felzkowsk? Kathy Bernier? Joan Ballweg? Amy Loudenbeck? Terry Katsma? Shannon Zimmerman? Jessie Rodriguez? Tony Kurtz?

The gorge is in Duey Stroebel’s Senate district. We know Stroebel is a conservative earning a living in real estate. We know he is not a champion of public projects by his devotion to diverting taxpayer funding for public schools to religious and private education. We know that Stroebel’s party throws around the word “socialist” when speaking of public projects–those that do not make someone a profit and generate tax revenue. How hard is he fighting for his constituents?

The self-described deep-pocketed anonymous buyer eager to develop the Cedar Gorge land—well, well, he met secretly last week to smooze Port’s mayor and city administrator.

Going forward, please remember the county supervisors who recently voted against another chance to save the land for the public with money from the American Rescue Act: Joshua Haas, Lee Schlenvogt, Don Clark, Rick Nelson, Dan Becker, Dave Larson, Tom Grabow, Marty Wolf, Shannon Whitworth and David Irish.

Regardless of your political affiliation, your legitimately anonymous votes in the next elections will express how you feel about those who have blocked this beautiful public project.
