LETTER: We got rid of one king and we sure don’t want another one

To Ozaukee Press:
We fought a revolution to gain our freedom from a king and I don’t ever want to live under a monarchy. King Charles III, in the musical “Hamilton,” sang, “You’ll be back!” No, that isn’t going to happen. We must remember our history.
After winning our independence, the Constitution was written to establish fundamental rights and civil liberties and to prevent the federal government from infringing on these rights. The Bill of Rights was added as 10 amendments to further define our rights.
We fought a Civil War to free us from slavery and to rectify the wrongs we had done. Articles 13-15, the Reconstruction Amendments, abolished slavery, defined citizenship, established due process and prohibited denial of the right to vote based on race, color or previous condition of servitude.
Still, another wrong had to be righted. The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote.
We fought to gain these freedoms, and we cannot let one man do away with them. There are three equal branches of government to safeguard our rights. It is critical that the House of Representatives and
Senate uphold the oath to the Constitution they took and remember that they were elected to represent us and not be beholden to one man.
