LETTER: Thiensville official disdains the vulnerable in anti-Evers screed

To Ozaukee Press:

We read the opinions of Thiensville Village President Van Mobley regarding Covid-19 on the WisPolitics website.

My wife and I were appalled to be consigned to the scrap heap of Wisconsin’s society by his proposal that the vulnerable be “isolated” so that everyone else can get on with their lives free of any science-based virus precautions.

Mobley wrote: “The lethality of the virus is extraordinarily. In these circumstances, the correct course of action is for our leaders to tell the truth, do a better job of isolating, protecting and treating the vulnerable, and let everyone else get on with their lives minus the onerous, unwarranted, unconstitutional and ultimately useless public health restrictions to which we have been subjected over the last seven months.”

We were unaware that Mobley was somehow given the authority to pass judgment on the elderly and the vulnerable.

I am 78 years of age and my wife is 70, and she does not possess an immune system with which to fight the virus.

We take every precaution available to avoid contracting Covid-19 and are grateful when others also practice Covid safety.

We totally disagree with Mobley’s contention that the rest of Wisconsin has “the right to ignore science and data” and refuse to do something as simple as wearing a mask.

Rights are conditional.

The exercise of individual liberties depends on whether or not they jeopardize the health, safety and general welfare of society.

No one has the right to spread a lethal virus.

Mobley’s idea is to let the virus run its course so that eventually so many people will be infected that the outbreak will fizzle out because the germ finds it harder to find a susceptible host.

Nearly three-quarters of Wisconsinites would have to become infected for this immunity to take effect.

This would require 3.8 million Wisconsin citizens to be infected, with as many as 17,000 deaths resulting.

As an elected official, Mobley appears to be blatantly ignorant of the safety of the citizens of Thiensville and has chosen to spread his ignorance statewide.
