LETTER: Security cameras needed to deter vandals in park, marina
To Ozaukee Press:
A week ago there was a great deal of destruction in the Port Washingotn marina and Rotary Park. In the marina, equipment was tossed off some of the charter fishing boats into the lake, and other boats were set adrift. At Rotary Park, the branches of the garden teepee were smashed and ivy plants uprooted, tearing down the tent of green that had begun to take form.
I’m a volunteer gardener at the park. Last year I conceived of the garden tent, enticed another volunteer to build it from the birch trees on his property, then carefully wove the vines to create a little piece of nature where children could play. It has become a favorite photo op for families.
Do we have widespread security cameras in the marina and Rotary Park?
Security cameras would serve as a deterrent to this type of destruction and a tool to solve crimes. I realize city officials may be reluctant to undermine privacy, but it feels more important that we keep our residents, boats and park safe. Rotary Park should be included in this umbrella of safety. Many residents and boat people walk dogs in the park after dark, and would appreciate the safety that a security camera would provide.
Who can understand people who want to destroy beauty? Parents can help. When your children see pretty flowers and want to pick them, remind them that flowers are in parks for all to enjoy. This helps nurture a sense of stewardship that will help them develop into caring and responsible adults.
