LETTER: Praise for paver plan, criticism for principal facing DUI charge

To Ozaukee Press:

I would like to comment on two articles in last week’s Ozaukee Press.

First, I support Ald. Mike Gasper to move forward with the study on the use of permeable pavers for Port Washington’s Lake Street. We know that more than once that street has become a creek streaming right into the lake. It is really ground zero for waters going into the lake in that area. Also, the pavers would add an aesthetic appeal to our developing marina area.

My second comment is a sad one regarding the behavior of Port Washington High School Principal Thad Gabrielse. OK, he was charged with driving under the influence. That I could overlook if he had manned up and accepted the arrest. He could have used it as a teaching experience for the students by confessing to them that he had done something really stupid, getting into his vehicle and driving after downing a few drinks.

It could have been—don’t do what I did. He could have promised them that he would wear a dunce hat for a week to remind them that he did something stupid and then take the looks and comments he deserved.

Instead, he chose to lawyer up and not take responsibility for his actions. That is something the School Board should consider as it assesses his character. My children know if they had been caught, I would have made them accept the consequences of their actions. This is not how a principal should act.
