LETTER: Plenty to fear: Covid, climate change and especially Trump
To Ozaukee Press:
With all due respect, everything in last week’s letter to the editor from Dennis Gasper, “There’s nothing to fear from Covid, climate change, Trump,” was inaccurate. He seems to think that Covid is no more serious than the common cold, that climate change is comparable to a warm summer day, and that Donald Trump is just Ronald Reagan with an orange face and a wild hairdo.
Over seven million people have died worldwide from Covid. Coronavirus is an extremely serious disease. Thank goodness for the vaccines.
In regard to climate change, it is now a well researched fact, resulting in higher temperatures, stronger storms and persistent droughts. Last year was the hottest on record. Thankfully, coal-fired power plants are being phased out and we are producing record amounts of electricity from wind and solar, both of which are clean, renewable energy. Over the next decade or two, the world will phase out most fossil fuel use.
And then there’s Trump. He was impeached twice by the U.S. House of Representatives, the first time for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress and then for incitement of insurrection. Trump has lied repeatedly about the 2020 election, which he lost. He attempted a coup to stay in power illegally after he lost, first by filing 60 frivolous lawsuits, then putting pressure on state officials, then by hatching a fake elector scheme, and finally culminating in the deadly insurrection at our U.S. Capitol.
Trump had hoped to delay the counting of electoral votes on Jan. 6, 2021. Thankfully the vast majority of our senators and representatives did the right thing and certified President Joseph Biden as the winner.
Trump has been convicted for sexual assault and defamation in the E. Jean Carol case and found guilty of business fraud in a New York case. He is facing approximately 90 felony counts in four other criminal cases for stealing top secret government documents, racketeering and trying to steal the 2020 election.
He took the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement and out of the World Health Organization during the pandemic. He is a pathological liar, having lied over 30,000 times during his one term in office. Trump is unqualified, disqualified and dangerous.
