LETTER: Pickleball lights cast annoying glare on neighboring homes

As a direct neighbor to Port Washington’s Kolbach Park for almost 15 years, it is wonderful to see the improvements. We enjoy the activities and sounds of children and people of all ages having a good time. I even helped with planting the new rain garden.

We really hope the city keeps this park maintained the way it deserves to be. The track record has not been very good and we have had some unpleasant experiences as a result, including the less than creative trees planted along our fence line by the city that will eventually shade out our yard once again.

We do have one complaint—the pickleball court lighting. Whoever thought it

would be a good idea to put such bright lights facing east and west instead of north and south did not take into consideration the park’s neighbors. We are in the unfortunate position of having the side and back of our house illuminated every night until 10 p.m.

We have nothing blocking the light. This is directly affecting our enjoyment of dusk and the fireflies we worked hard to establish in our yard.

We moved to Port to avoid that big city feel, but now we feel like we are back in Milwaukee, where over the past 35 years the light pollution has rendered the stars invisible.

We really hope the city takes light pollution seriously. Light pollution is a nuisance.
