Every year in the American Catholic calendar, October is designated as Pro-Life Month—a time to recognize the imperative to protect the life of the unborn, the elderly, the handicapped (aren’t we all in some way?) and others who need protection from harm over which they have no control.

This last group brings to mind the 18 people killed and 13 wounded in a mass shooting on Oct. 25 in Lewiston, Maine.
