LETTER: Johnson’s visit mirrored GOP disdain for anti-Covid rules

To Ozaukee Press:

Sen. Ron Johnson attended the Ozaukee Republicans’ fall fundraiser while positive for Covid-19: The Democratic Party of Ozaukee County held its annual fall fundraiser one week before—virtually. No one was exposed to the virus, including our guest speaker, Gov. Tony Evers.

We did this to protect ourselves and all Ozaukee County families. The meetings of the Democratic Party of Ozaukee County and the state party have been virtual since the pandemic started.

President Trump, Johnson and most of the Republican Party have been flaunting risky behavior rather than following the CDC guidelines meant to save lives and protect our economy. The economy will recover if we work hard to beat this deadly virus.

Instead of doing some work to fight this health crisis, the Republican-dominated Wisconsin Legislature has not been in session for more than 175 days. They initiate taxpayer-funded lawsuits to stop the transparency of Covid-19 data, as well as to stop Gov. Evers’ mask mandate.

The Wisconsin GOP controls both houses. They could call a session, take a vote and strike down the mandate. Why are they using the courts? Where do Senators Darling and Stroebel, Reps. Dan Knodl, Rob Brooks and Jim Ott stand on this issue? The silence is deafening, while their action and inaction tell us who they are.

We are fortunate to have excellent Democratic candidates challenging the incumbents who rigged their gerrymandered voting districts. Let’s outfox them. Vote for Deb Andraca or Emily Siegrist for Assembly, Neal Plotkin for the Senate and Jessica King for U.S. Congress. Vote for a healthy future.
