LETTER: Informed voters exercising their right is non-partisan LWV goal
To Ozaukee Press:
In a few short weeks, voters will be heading to the polls to cast votes in the mid-term 2018 elections. Now is the time for all eligible voters in Wisconsin and Ozaukee County to familiarize themselves with the candidates on the ballot. You can see your ballot on myvote.wi.gov.
Whether you are an 18-year-old high school senior or senior citizen, a manager or CEO, election day is the voters’ opportunity to weigh in on the issues that matter most to you by voting on Nov. 6.
Over the last year, the LWV Ozaukee County has held five forums for candidates in order to share information with the public so voters can make their choice. This is the League’s focus. A candidate’s opinion of the League should not be the issue, but rather how the candidate can best represent his or her constituents. The League-sponsored candidate forums operate under fair and open guidelines to provide impartial information to the voters. They follow a long-standing set of rules that result in a civil and safe environment for candidates. And we have done that in Ozaukee County.
The League is non-partisan in that its organization never endorses or opposes any political candidate or party. League members do a good job of maintaining nonpartisanship in the name of safeguarding democracy.
We are proud that the organization takes positions on important issues, especially those related to voter rights. Individual LWV members, as citizens, have opinions and are free to participate fully in our democracy.
These last weeks are an important time for all voters to take advantage of every opportunity to get our questions answered by the candidates. Voting is the one time when all citizens have an equal say in standing up for the issues and priorities that matter most to our community and to us.
We encourage all eligible voters to be informed and involved. Vote on Nov. 6. Our jobs, health, education, families and futures depend on it.
