LETTER: Guns have no place in schools, certainly not in teachers’ hands

To Ozaukee Press:

As the discussion about arming teachers continues, it has this old educator mulling over so many thoughts. If this happened, who would the teachers of the future be? Would they be the caring, thoughtful people we remember teaching us? Would they actually be willing to shoot someone? If they shoot, would they hit children or another teacher?

Arming the schoolhouses of this nation would further damage the image of the U.S. forever. It can be assumed that our country has already hurt its worldwide perception through the massive number of gun deaths we incur each year.

Having teachers engage in gun battles while among children in incomprehensible.

So, let’s step back and avoid taking actions that would dramatically affect the character of our children’s schools and the people who teach in them.

The problem of gun violence and mass shootings in no way originated in the schoolhouse, and arming educators will not solve it.
