LETTER: Gun votes deflate Grothman’s claim to being ‘crime fighter’

To Ozaukee Press:

Wisconsin’s 6th District residents recently received a glossy mailing from U.S.  Rep. Glenn Grothman: “Fighting Crime by Backing Our Police.” Interestingly, his initial voting record reveals otherwise.

Grothman voted against the Federal Extreme Risk Protection bill that would limit possession of firearms and ammunition by individuals who are subject to extreme risk protection orders.

He voted against increasing the age to purchase firearms, preventing gun trafficking, prohibition of untraceable firearms, safe storage of guns and expanding FBI and Justice Department efforts to monitor domestic terrorist activity.

The National Rifle Association has given more than $4.5 million over the past 20 years to Republican office holders in Wisconsin. Grothman has received thousands of dollars from the NRA.

So much for Glenn Grothman’s crime fighting. He is making police work harder.

Monday, as our nation was celebrating our glorious independence and freedom for all, another community, Highland Park, Ill., was left sadly destroyed by gun violence. These frequent mass shootings are uniquely American.

Voting for lawmakers who are sponsored by gun associations only delays the day when America will find a way to prevent these repeated tragedies made possible by unrestricted gun ownership.
