LETTER: Freedom fighters of Ukraine inspire us to defend our liberty

To Ozaukee Press:

Early church father Tertullian observed that “the blood of the martyrs is seed for the church.”

The story of Bohdan Krotevych’s beleaguered regiment that made its last stand against Russian invaders at the Ukrainian Azovstal steel plant illustrates how this statement is no less true for nations.

It revives memories of our own battles, lost and won, that have built this nation and defended its liberty, the battles of Corregidor and the Alamo, Iwo Jima, Chosen and Pork Chop Hill.

Ukrainian freedom fighters are reteaching us the old facts of life—that the blessing of liberty, its peace and safety, do not come cheaply and must be maintained with blood.

We pray that the Ukrainian example may inspire our own people and our current leaders. We have paid too much for this free nation to surrender it easily.
