LETTER: Contrast with Thailand shows Trump’s U.S. lacks compassion

To Ozaukee Press:
The entire world was overjoyed by the successful rescue of the 12 boys and their coach from the Thailand caves. We watched and listened for progress as the drama unfolded and resulted in success. We were amazed at the cooperation, caring and commitment shown by the government of Thailand and the personnel who were involved in the rescue operation.
Contrast that caring with the treatment of children who entered the United States with their immigrant parents. At least 3,000 (actual number unknown) were separated from their parents, held in detention centers or sent all over the United States, all due to policies of Donald Trump and the United States government.
While there is some effort to reunite them, there is a strong likelihood that some will be permanently separated from their parents. This is tragic and unbelievable as we think of that occurring in our own families.
We know the two situations were completely different. However, the bottom line is how the treatment of children was handled. In the Thailand situation, the children were given love and caring. In the United States the children were shown little or no regard for safety, compassion and respect.
In the past, our nation has been known for caring and compassion for all people and especially children. Under the Trump administration, that caring and cherishing no longer exists.
