LETTER: City should own up to flood mistakes, stop blaming God
To Ozaukee Press:
The Port Washington Common Council has chosen to follow the guidelines of EMC, the city’s insurance carrier, and deny claims filed by victims of the flood because the flood was an “act of God.”
I find it difficult to believe that God decided to fill in the natural mouth of the river and replace it with a culvert.
Additionally, the decision to add a swail to handle the river overflow when the drainage ability of the culvert proved to be inadequate was made by the city.
The Common Council should own up to the city’s past engineering mistakes, reopen the river to Lake Michigan, honestly address the victims’ legitimate claims and stop blaming the Almighty.
