LETTER: Checks and balances used to protect us; now not so much
To Ozaukee Press:
Sooner or later the autocrats and dictators in the world get around to preying on their own citizens to maintain their tight grip on power. They use intimidation, cruelty and lies to gain the support of the unsuspecting. This isn’t new; it was very popular during the 20th century as we watched Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and others inflict their terror on their citizens.
In this country, we never had to worry about this because of the safeguards created in our democracy through the separation of powers. Sadly, this appears to be breaking apart as the weak-kneed Congress and Justice Department appear to be willing to watch as our felonious president goes about punishing us with higher prices for liking imports from our friends and punishing our fellow citizens for doing their jobs by firing them for serving our country.
Elon Musk’s antics showcase the richest man in the world taking delight in firing thousands of our citizens because they serve the country.
