LETTER: Challenger deserves votes to replace appointed supervisor

To Ozaukee Press:

April 2 is spring election day. On the ballot is the election of Ozaukee County Board supervisors. Fifteen (58%) are running unopposed.

What do supervisors do? They determine policy for all Ozaukee County issues: economic opportunity, public safety, transportation, health, recreation, education and environmental protection.

County Board minutes from the Feb. 21 meeting note that Supr. Shannon Whitworth was not present, not excused but absent. His tenure did not begin as a result of citizen votes. In 2021, Chairman Lee Schlenvogt appointed him to the board to fill a vacancy.

Whitworth is a thought-provoking writer on social and educational issues, as in his article in The Federalist titled “Banning Critical Race Theory Is a Good Step, but It Doesn’t Go Far Enough.” In the article, he expresses being “a useful idiot for the white man. As a Black conservative, I know the look well.”

On the County Board, he voted against financing the Clay Bluffs Cedar Gorge Nature Preserve, as did nine other supervisors in real estate developer State Sen. Duey Stroebel’s District 16.

Now, District 16 voters have another choice—Connie Kincaide. She has attended County Board meetings biweekly since 2021, was appointed to the City of Cedarburg Diversity committee in 2022 and elected  to the Cedarburg School Board in 2023. She is committed to serving Cedarburg and Ozaukee County residents.

She has experience working with financial institutions, small businesses and local school systems, all of which are part of a supervisor’s policy decision responsibilities. She is a wife, mother, advocate and volunteer.

I reached out to both candidates for their views. Only Connie Kincaide responded. Voters will decide whether they want a supervisor who’s absent or one who responds and shows up.
