LETTER: Celebrate contributions of people with disabilities
To Ozaukee Press:
In 1987, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5613, officially designating March as National Disabilities Awareness Month and calling on communities to promote understanding, encouragement and opportunities so individuals with disabilities can lead productive and fulfilling lives.
Everyone deserves the chance to feel valued, productive and secure. During March, we place special emphasis on raising awareness of the rights, contributions and support that enable people with disabilities to participate fully in community life. It is also a time to celebrate the many ways they enrich our communities and society.
At Portal Inc., we see these contributions every day. People with disabilities are valued members of the Ozaukee County community — working, volunteering and patronizing businesses throughout the county. While many rely on Medicaid-funded support, they proudly give back as employees, volunteers, neighbors and customers who strengthen our local economy and community. They also remind us of essential values: authenticity, appreciation, understanding and kindness.
Awareness can begin with simple actions, such as speaking up when derogatory language is used or encouraging respectful, inclusive interactions. Individuals, organizations and businesses are encouraged to observe March by promoting activities and conversations that increase public understanding of the abilities, contributions and potential of Americans with disabilities.
We invite our community to join in recognizing and celebrating our neighbors with disabilities by being welcoming, inclusive and appreciative of the value they bring to our community.
