Klas’ season-high propels Ozaukee

Greta Klas’ hot hand led the Ozaukee High School girls’ basketball team to an easy 70-37 Big East Conference win against visiting Sheboygan Christian on Jan. 7.

 “We got a big shooting night from Greta, with six three-pointers,” Ozaukee coach Tim Wolff said.

Klas, a senior, led all scorers with 20 points, her highest total of the season.

“I could see in practice that she is starting to heat up,” Wolff said.

The Warriors got off to a somewhat slow start, and led by just seven at halftime, 37-30.

“I thought that we played a little bit sluggish in the first half,” Wolff said.

The halftime break was good for the home team.

“We played pretty intense in the second half. Wolff said. “The girls really stepped up in the second half. We really challenged them at the half, and they responded.”

Wolff had high praise for senior Becca Schauer, who was two assists away from a triple-double.

“Becca had a great overall game with eight assists and 12 steals,” Wolff said.

Schauer had 19 points.

Gabby Klas scored 13 points and Izzy Clark chipped in 12. Clark had five assists.

Ashlee Mueller led Ozaukee with six rebounds and had four assists.

“It was nice to get a game where we had a comfortable lead at the end, (so) that everyone got to play a fair amount,” Wolff said.

The Eagles, 1-8 in the Big East, were led by Megan Moeller and Olivia Heinen with 12 points each.

The Warriors, 6-3 in the Big East and 8-3 overall, took their six-game winning streak into Tuesday’s game against visiting Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah (2-6 Big East).

On Thursday, Ozaukee travels to Hilbert (2-6).

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Sheboygan Lutheran (0-9) comes to Fredonia.

CG-Belgium girls go one up, one down

Cedar Grove-Belgium needed overtime to beat Big East foe Kohler at home on Jan. 7.

The Rockets bounced back from a 22-18 halftime deficit to tie the game at 35-35 by the end of regulation. In overtime, the Rockets outscored the Blue Bombers, 11-2, for a 46-37 victory.

Amy TenHaken scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Alexis Bahr had 10 points and six rebounds. Maddie Sutryk had nine points and five blocks. Shelby Cooney, the team’s defensive star all season long, made seven steals, had six rebounds, five assists and seven points.

Kohler went to 5-4 in the Big East. The Rockets are 4-4.

Mallory Keller scored 16 for Kohler.

At nonconference foe Kewaskum last Saturday, the Rockets lost, 39-27. TenHaken scored nine points and Bahr had six.

The Rockets, 5-6 overall, hosted Hilbert (2-6 Big East) on Tuesday, host Random Lake (4-4) on Thursday and Oostburg (7-1) on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
