Huibregtse gets hot vs. Hartford

They didn’t hit their defensive goal of holding Hartford to 55 points, but Alex Huibregtse and the rest of the Grafton High School boys’ basketball team did enough on offense on Dec. 17.

The Black Hawks topped the Orioles, 74-64, behind Huibregtse’s 39 points.

Huibregtse was hot from the outside and attacked the paint, then made his 15-footers when he was fouled.

The senior went 5-for-8 on three-pointers, 9-for-11 on two-pointers and 6-for-8 on free throws.

“He was in a rhythm early. It was kind of hard for me to take him out,” coach Damon James said.

Huibregtse scored 22 points in the first half. The Hawks were up, 35-28, at the break.

“Then in the second half a couple of the other guys — Brock Heffner and J.P. Benzschawel — started to impose their wills down on the block,” James said.

Heffner scored 14 points and Benzschawel had 13, along with seven rebounds.

James also praised senior guard Zach Weir.

“It’s not in the stats, but I thought Zach Weir played an outstanding game defensively. He had eight deflections. He was being active, being engaged,” James said.

James Radolff scored 17 points for Hartford, and Nate Bloxdorf had 16.

While the Hawks were still seeking a standout defensive performance, James said he will take a victory anytime.

“You never know when you’re going to get your next,” he said.

The Hawks, 3-2, hosted Port Washington on Friday and play Kaukauna on Thursday and Waukesha West on Saturday in the Rick Majerus Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon.
