Horse painter is next artist in residence
Julie Anna Freund is the November artist in residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.
Freund said she creates art that “honors the positive impact horses have had on my life. My hope is to share my love and appreciation for these animals through my artwork.”
She will demonstrate her art at the center from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, Nov. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 24 and 25.
Freund will also teach an acrylic painting workshop, “Scale It Up: First Things First,” which will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2.
The workshop, which is for beginners, students will learn to create proportionately accurate paintings from an existing image or photograph by using a grid technique. This technique assists in the early stages of the process by breaking down the reference image into small sections, making it easier and more manageable to create a drawing or sketch for the painting.
Students should bring a 16-by-20-inch stretched canvas and an 8-by-10-inch reference photo. All other supplies are included.
The fee is $52 for center members and $62 for nonmembers.
Freund, who was born and raised in upstate New York, has been drawing and painting all her life.
She began riding horses at the age of 8, entering her first show at 10, and found sanctuary in being around horses after losing her father at a young age.
Freund graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting, and she double minored in equestrian studies and art history. She attended Bridgewater College in Virginia, then transferred to the Savannah College of Art and Design.
She has resided in Milwaukee ever since, teaching both riding and painting and serving as an administrative assistant at the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital before becoming a full-time mother three years ago.
