Honoring first responders at the Capitol

State Rep. Rob Brooks (left) presented Cedarburg Fire Chief Jeff Vahsholtz with a legislative citation honoring him as the First Responder of the Year for the 60th Assembly District at the Capitol Oct. 17. Vahsholtz, who was a Cedarburg police officer from May 1982 until retiring in May 2018, and has been with the Cedarburg Fire Department since May 1978. He was named chief in 2015. “Mr. Vahsholtz’s 40-plus years of service to our communities make him uniquely qualified for this honor,” Brooks said. Rep. Paul Melotik named Carol Barthel as District. 24’s First Responder of the Year. Barthel has been an EMT since 1981, starting her career with the Mequon Ambulance Service. She was named assistant ambulance director in 1992 and served in that position until the Mequon Ambulance and Fire Department merged in 2010. She continued serving as an EMT-Advanced for the Mequon Fire Department for 13 years and, after the Mequon and Thiensville fire departments merged to form the Southern Ozaukee Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, until retiring in July.
