Honoring community leaders for ‘Service Above Self’

The Port Washington-Saukville Rotary Club presented two community leaders with Paul Harris fellowships — named for the founder of Rotary International to honor those who exemplify the club motto “Service Above Self” — during an Oct. 29 program at the Port Washington Yacht Club. Craig Modahl (center) received the fellowship for his work as the founder of Balance Inc., an organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and Barbara Bates-Nelson (third from right) for her work as executive director of United Way of Northern Ozaukee. Modahl and Bates-Nelson are not members of Rotary, but the club can recognize community leaders who exemplify service to the community with the fellowship. Present at the event were (from left) Rotary District Gov. Peter Bosch, Port Mayor Ted Neitzke, Sandy Modahl, Craig Modahl, Bates-Nelson, longtime Rotary Club member Steve Schowalter, who talked about the history of United Way of Northern Ozaukee, and club member Jim Asplin, who nominated Modahl and Bates-Nelson for the fellowship. Asplin also presented Sandy Modahl with his Paul Harris pin after learning that night of her work to establish Balance Inc. Photo by Sam Arendt
