Village looking into splitting clerk, treasurer duties into two positions

The Village of Fredonia is considering hiring an administrative assistant to help with village clerical duties.

Trustee and chair of the Personnel Committee said his committee recently discussed hiring an administrative assistant to assist new clerk Melissa Depies with treasurer duties in the village.

Discussions about breaking the clerk role, which has historically covered both clerk and treasurer duties, into two positions began when long-time clerk Sandi Tretow left the position last November.

Village President Don Dohrwardt said having treasurer and clerk duties split into two positions would be the best arrangement to manage village duties.

Consideration of the second position was initially put on hold when filling even the primary clerk role took longer than expected because of a low amount of eligible candidates applying for the spot.

But with Depies in the role earlier this year, the Personnel Committee is once again considering the administrative assistant position.

Trustee Bill McLarty said the new position would allow the clerk and administrative assistant to cross train each other, creating a redundancy which might prove useful if one of the positions is ever left vacant and a new person needs to be trained in the role.

He said while discussions need to be had on the position and its financial impact to the village, that the role would likely require a 32-hour work week.

“We have some more research to do on the benefit costs and whatnot,” McLarty said.

The position is expected to be discussed at future Personnel Committee meetings before potentially moving on to the Village Board for consideration.
