Grafton High School sophomore Parker Strozewski won last week’s home Division 2 golf sectional at the Bog and qualified for the state. His teammates nearly came along.
Strozewski shot 76 to win the event by one shot, and it was one shot that kept Grafton from a chance at moving on as a team. The Black Hawks shot 327. Catholic Memorial shot 326 and finished second. The top two teams qualify.
University School of Milwaukee won with 314.
“I knew my front nine was really good (36). I thought it was going to be good going in. I kinda thought I did good individually. I didn’t know I would win,” Strozewski, who was one stroke behind teammate Jake Leidel for top golfer in the North Shore Conference this season, said.
Golfers played through another rainstorm that led to a delay midway through the meet.
“You just kind of have to try not to smash it. Just try and have a good grip. Add more yardage, swing smoother. You have to accept you’re not going to pound it,” he said of playing in the rain.
Miles Jaeger, last year’s state qualifier for Grafton, gave the sophomore some tips.
“He just said, ‘Stay relaxed, there’s no pressure. It’s all you. Just have fun out there,’” Strozewski said.
Jaeger shot 81. William Reiss shot 82. Jake Leidel shot 88 and Kendyl Conrad shot 89.
Port finished last with 329 strokes in the Division 1 Beaver Dam Sectional.
Jonas Fechner shot 78 and lipped out an eight-foot par put on No. 18 that would have put him in a playoff to qualify for state for a second straight season.
“Jonas was a little bummed out,” coach Rory Palubiski said, adding sub sandwiches and ice cream after the meet helped.
Jack Schowalter shot 81. Jaden Palubiski shot 84. Peyton Maves shot 86 and Eric Krentz shot 98.
