Gymnasts perform at high level

Neither the Port Washington nor Grafton/Cedarburg high school gymnastics’ teams qualified anyone for state, but both came through with some top performances last Saturday at sectionals.

Port scored 116.125 points and finished seventh at the Whitefish Bay Division 2 sectional, which was won by the hosts with 141.775.

The Pirates’ score was nearly the team’s season high.

Audrey Dickson had 8.55 on floor exercise, followed by Emma Bollech’s 7.45 and Clare Ritter and Alyana Alexander.

On vault, Dickson had 8.35, Bollech had 7.65, Sitharah Achakzai had 7.3 and Willow Rogers had 7.05.

Dickson had 8.3 and Bollech had 7.5 on bars.

On beam, Port’s seniors all scored season high totals. Dickson had 8.45, Bollech had 7.7 and Alexander had 7.4.

“What a way to end the meet,” coach Gale Sigler said.

“I am so very proud of these girls and all the work they put into their season. As a coach, you only can ask for top effort and peak performances come tournament time.,” Sigler said.

“The Pirate crew will miss the talent and consistency that leaves with our four graduating gymnasts, but will look forward to the exciting potential of their underlings.”

The Bullhawks scored 126.525 points and finished seventh at the Division 1 Arrowhead sectional. Homestead won with 141.825 points.

The Bullhawks got a boost by getting Amanda Babcock back from injury.

She led the team on bars with 8.3, followed by Alaina Jarmuz’s 8.2, Teagan White’s 7.8 and Olivia Rossi’s 7.2.

On floor, Jarmuz had 8.325, White had 7.65, Lacey Greicar had 7.5 and Ava McLaughlin had 7.45.

Kaelyn Chmiel led the Bullhawks on vault with 8.475. Jarmuz had 8.375, Rossi and 8.3 and White had 8.25.

On beam, Kaelyn Chmiel had 8.325, followed by Rossi’s 7.775, Jarmuz’s 7.675 and White.

“I was pleased with the improvements these girls made as the season progressed, and it was so nice to have senior Amanda Babcock back one last time to perform with her teammates,” Sigler, who filled in as the Bullhawks coach this season, said.

“The girls gave one of their best when it mattered most and that’s all a coach can ask for. The Bullhawks are a young and talented group of gymnasts with much success to look forward to.”
