Grafton Rec Dept. has host of activities

The Grafton Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of activities to start the new year.

Yang Tai Chi, a slow-motion form of Chinese martial arts that focuses on developing strength, balance and coordination, will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 14 through Feb. 18.

Due to the relatively gentle and slow movements, Yang-style Tai Chi can be practiced by people of all ages and abilities.

Isaac Yong Hou is the instructor. The class is held on the lower level of the Grafton Multipurpose Senior Center, 1665 Seventh Ave.

The cost is $25 for village residents and $38 for others.

• First aid for pets will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Municipal Services Facility, 675 N. Green Bay Rd.

Participants will learn first aid, pet CPR techniques for dogs and cats and how to assemble a pet first-aid kit. After completion, participants will earn a two-year certification in accordance with veterinarian-reviewed and approved Pet Hero curriculum.

The class is open to those 16 and older. The cost is $46 per person. Advance registration is required.

• Belly dance will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Sundays, Jan. 19 through Feb. 23, in the lower level of the Grafton Senior Center.

Participants will learn a set vocabulary of belly dance movements, cues, chorus structure and formations. The dance is a Kajira Djoumanha’s format, which initiates from both sides of the body for balance. Finger cymbals and hip belts or a shawl are encouraged but not required.

The cost is $90. Advance registration is required.

• Safe Sitter Essentials will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Municipal Services Facility.

The course is designed to prepare students in grades six through eight to be safe when they are home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting. Students will learn safety skills, child care skills, first aid and rescue, life and business skills through games and role-playing exercises.

Jessica Heller of Heller Safety Solutions is the instructor.

The cost is $85.
