Geis’ gargantuan game helps Ozaukee top rival
In the game of her career, Ozaukee High School’s Evie Geis scored 20 points and pulled down 21 rebounds to lead the Warriors to a come-from-behind 76-64 Big East Conference victory over host Random Lake last Thursday.
“This was a hard-fought game by both teams,” Ozaukee coach Linda Weyker said.
“We knew we had to play solid defense and rebound as well as control our fouls. Evelynn Geis came off the bench and had her best game. She had a strong game on the inside. We also had Gabby Klas, Sophie Uhlenberg and Caitlyn Weyker with double-digit scoring.”
Geis, a junior, snagged 13 rebounds and scored eight points in the first half to help keep the Warriors close.
Klas, who finished with 19 points, scored 10 before the break.
Behind the hot shooting of Abby Borchardt, who poured in 15 points in the first half, the Rams held a 38-31 halftime lead.
The Warriors outscored the Rams, 14-4, in the first four minutes of the second half.
After Geis made a traditional three-point play with 14:08 on the clock, Ozaukee led, 45-43.
The Rams tied the game once after that, but the Warriors got a three-point basket from Weyker and never trailed again.
Klas’ total included five long-range baskets.
Uhlenberg scored 12 points and tallied 11 rebounds. Weyker had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Random Lake was led by Borchardt with 22 points. Halle Van Horn scored 12 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had six assists. Courtney Rathke scored 10 points and Trista Noll had nine.
Klas notches 28 in loss at Reedsville
A huge offensive game by Klas was not enough to notch a victory for the Warriors at Reedsville Feb. 8.
Ozaukee lost the conference game, 79-63.
“This was a tough loss for us,” Weyker said.
“We struggled on defense, especially in keeping Reedsville off the boards.”
Klas had 28 points with six three-pointers and seven rebounds.
The Panthers had six players score in double digits. Kara Kiekhafer had 15 points and 15 rebounds, and Makayla Junk had 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Makaylynn Mratz scored 13 points, Keegan Grim scored 12 and Megan VanDyke and Alayna Peterson each had 11.
Uhlenberg scored 12 points and nabbed four steals. Weyker scored nine points and Natalie Miller had five assists and four steals.
On Monday, the Warriors were trounced at Oostburg, 80-41, in a game that was never close.
Weyker had eight points and seven rebounds.
For the Lady Dutch, Brynn Wisse had 25 points and Ashley Ternes had 21.
Ozaukee, 10-13 overall and 8-10 in the Big East, will end the regular season Thursday at Sheboygan Christian (0-18 Big East).
Ozaukee earned a No. 7 seed in the Division 4 tournament and will host 10-seeded Kohler (4-14 Big East) on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The Warriors swept the season series with the Blue Bombers, winning 64-54 and 80-71.
The winner plays at No. 2-seeded St. Mary’s Springs on Friday, Feb. 25.
