Funds, volunteers needed to Feed Starving Children
Donations and registrations are being taken for the April 17 and 18 Feed My Starving Children event sponsored by St. John XXIII Catholic Parish.
The packing is done at Portal Inc. in Grafton during the two days. On Friday, April 17, shifts run from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday, April 18, they run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Each meal costs 24 cents and contains rice, soy protein, 20 vitamins and minerals, dehydrated vegetables, and vegetarian chicken flavor. They are distributed at sites operated by Christian mission partners, orphanages, clinics, humanitarian relief centers, and schools in more than 70 countries world-wide.
The parish hopes to pack and ship more than 108,000 meals this year.
The parish has been raising funds and packaging meals for children throughout the world since 2010. In total, the parish has packed more than 1.3 million meals that have been shipped to Nicaragua, Haiti, Swaziland and Cambodia.
In 2018, the parish raised enough money and signed up 511 volunteers to pack 108,864 meals, or 17,000 pounds of food, that shipped to Nicaragua to feed 298 children one meal a day for a year.
Money donated to the effort is tax deductible. Checks can be made out to Feed My Starving Children or St. John XXIII and sent to St. John XXIII Parish,1800 N. Wisconsin St., Port Washington 53074. The designation MP 2004-012SC should be placed in the memo.
