Friends of the Bog to host winter events
The Friends of the Cedarburg Bog in the Town of Saukville will host several winter events including a morning walk on Friday, Feb. 23.
Liz Herzmann, a wildlife educator at Horicon Marsh, will lead the 9 to 10:30 a.m. walk searching for tracks, scat and other signs of active winter animals at the Bog.
Participants are asked to bring binoculars.
Walks begin at the UWM Field Station at the Cedarburg Bog on Blue Goose Road in the Town of Saukville.
Walks are free, although a $5 donation is appreciated.
Pets are not allowed.
On Saturday, March 2, the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog will host an Identifying Woody Plants in Winter program from 9 a.m. to noon.
Naturalist Danielle Bell will teach participants how to recognize characteristics of native tree and shrub species as well as invasive woody species, which are best removed in winter. Participants will carefully observe plants using hand lenses.
This is an indoor and outdoor program.
A Mammals of the Cedarburg Bog and Ozaukee program will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 8.
The indoor/outdoor program will be led by Julia Robson, who will introduce participants to the fascinating and mysterious mammals that inhabit the area. The second half of the program will be dedicated to looking for mammal scat and tracks in the Bog.
How trees grow will be the topic of a Sunday, March 17, program.
Half indoor presentation, half outdoor walk, the program will be led by Jim Reinartz, director emeritus of the UWM Field Station, and explore how branches grow, how the plumbing system of trees is formed and connected and how trees move sugars made in its leaves to other parts of the plant.
