Football proposal puts Port and Grafton back in the same league
Port Washington and Grafton high schools’ football teams would return to the same conference under a new proposal from the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association.
The WIAA’s Conference Realignment Task Force developed football and lacrosse plans this month that, pending approval by the Board of Control, would take effect for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
Forty-six schools requested a change from their current conference affiliation, including 28 in 11-player football, 16 in eight-player football and two in boys and girls’ lacrosse, according to a WIAA release.
A new conference, called Glacier Trails, would include Port, Grafton, West Bend East and West, Kettle Moraine Lutheran, Kewaskum and Plymouth. It’s one team short of the WIAA-desired eight.
Enrollments for 2024-25 at the schools range from 594 at Kewaskum to 1,072 at West Bend West. Port and Grafton fall in the middle with 804 for the Pirates and 718 for the Black Hawks.
The new league includes teams from the East Central (Port, Kewaskum, KML and Plymouth), the North Shore (West Bend East and West) and the Woodland (Grafton) conferences.
Cedarburg remains in the North Shore Conference, along with Homestead, Whitefish Bay, Nicolet, Hartford and Slinger. Pewaukee from the Classic Eight Conference and Wisconsin Lutheran from the Woodland would be added.
The Big East Conference would add Mishicot from the Packerland Conference, joining Cedar Grove-Belgium, Random Lake/Ozaukee, Oostburg, Howards Grove, Hilbert, Reedsville and Manitowoc Lutheran.
The Board of Control will vote on the proposals on March 11.
