First-half Hindenburg stops CG-Belgium win streak
A disastrous first half was too much to recover from for the Cedar Grove-Belgium High School girls’ basketball team last Saturday at Random Lake.
But the Rockets played a solid second half in a 66-41 loss to the Rams, halting their winning streak at two games.
“They’re a pretty solid team from top to bottom,” coach Jason Jones said. “They played a great first half.”
The Rockets were behind 41-15, at the break.
“We turned it over quite a bit. They’re a high-pressure team. They get up in your face.
They do a good job of it,” Jones said.
Amy TenHaken was the offensive bright spot, scoring 13 points, including two three-pointers. She had three rebounds and three assists.
“Amy played well. She had a pretty good game,” Jones said.
Alyssa Mentink had nine points on three three-pointers. Maddie Sutryk and Sydney Soerens each had four rebounds. Shelby Cooney had three assists. Alexis Bahr made three steals.
At halftime, Jones tweaked some things, and the Rockets outscored the Rams, 26-25, in the second half.
“We made some adjustments and the girls did respond well and played hard. I think we can learn and grow from that,” he said. “The girls did a nice job of responding in the second half and sticking with it and figuring out what worked for us.
I’m proud of the girls for that.”
Last Thursday, the Rockets played two complete halves in knocking off Sheboygan Christian, 47-30.
Scoring was spread mainly among four players. Mentink had 12 points and Bahr had 10, going 5-for-6 from the field. Soerens had nine and TenHaken had eight.
“Our girls stepped up and it was good to see them play two consistent halves and play a full game on Thursday,” Jones said. “We got up on them and tried to get them to turn it over as much we could. We’ve been doing a good job getting
the steals. We’ve just got to get better at finishing.”
The Eagles hung with the Rockets for a little while. The Rockets held a 23-15 lead at halftime and were up 20 for most of the second half, Jones said.
Soerens had six rebounds and Anna Claerbaut, Sutryk and TenHaken each had five. Cooney had four assists and six steals.
“She had a great game. She’s really been getting better at reading offenses and realizing when steals are available – and stealing without fouling. She had zero fouls and one turnover,” Jones said.
The Rockets, 2-1 in the Big East Conference and 2-2 overall, play at Oostburg on Thursday, host nonconference opponent Port Washington on Saturday and host league foe Manitowoc Lutheran on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
